About
Aside from the joy I felt when training and mentoring people in my corporate environment, I was in an endless cycle of burnout. But then I found Pilates, and it completely changed my life. It gave me the tools to enjoy exercise and be fully present in my body.My name is Heather Lacey. I opened the Composition Pilates microstudio in 2024 to create an environment where I could give clients personalized attention and guidance that simply isn’t possible in large group classes.Being a Pilates instructor allows me to combine my passion for supporting others’ growth with the joy of self-care through movement.
Since 2022, I’ve been teaching private and group Pilates classes to clients of all ages and fitness levels. Comprehensively trained and certified as a Balanced Body Pilates instructor with over 500 hours of training, I craft safe and effective private sessions using every piece of equipment. With a B.S. in Healthy Lifestyle Coaching from Arizona State University and a Nutrition & Wellness Consultant certification (AFPA), I approach Pilates from the perspective of whole-body well-being.I also know how it feels to be a Pilates newbie, so I make sure my classes feel approachable, light, and always infused with a bit of laughs. That means plenty of in-depth explanations, feedback, and motivation. Because Pilates should be for every body.

Frequently Asked Questions
Where is the studio located? The Composition Pilates studio is located at 2300 Wisconsin Ave NW. The building entrance is on Hall Street NW, and parking is available on the street (or lot parking is available for customers of CVS and Whole Foods). Go to the fourth floor, and you’ll find Composition Pilates in Suite 400B with DC Acupuncture. The Pilates studio is around the corner to the right when you walk in.
How much do private Pilates lessons cost? Private lessons are available for as low as $102/class. Classes can be purchased in packs or single classes, and we have a special offer for new clients.
What forms of payment are accepted? You can pay with any major credit card through the scheduling website or in person at the studio, and I also accept PayPal, Venmo, or Zelle.
When can I schedule private Pilates lessons? Private appointments are available most weekday mornings and can be scheduled through the StudioBookings page or by contacting me directly via email or phone. If you do not see an available time/day that works for you, please ask and I can add you to the waitlist.
Why are there no afternoon or evening appointments? I teach mainly mornings so I can give each client my full focus and energy at the beginning of the day.
How do duet and semi-private sessions work? Duets and semi-private sessions are small group classes for 2 people! These are taught on the mat and with equipment rotation. During the class, each participant will get shared, personalized attention. Classes are 50 minutes. For scheduling, please contact me.
What can I expect in my first private Pilates class? Your first private session will start with a discussion of goals and a quick assessment of posture, alignment, mobility, flexibility and balance. Based on this assessment, I’ll design a custom exercise program taking into account both your body’s needs and your goals for starting the Pilates program. During the remainder of the session, you will begin to work on exercises chosen specifically for the needs of your body. Depending on those needs, the exercises may be performed on the mat, reformer, chair or tower, and may include props, such as a ball, bands, weights, or foam roller.
What should I wear for Pilates? Wear clothing that is comfortable and breathable for exercise. Clothing that is form-fitting is preferred so I can accurately assess your form, but your comfort is priority. Some exercises may involve lifting the legs, and some clients like to wear leggings or bike shorts under baggy shorts. No shoes are permitted in the studio (but accommodations can be made for certain injuries and conditions.) Some clients like to wear grippy socks, but bare feet are fine too!
Do I need to bring anything? Just bring yourself and your water bottle! The studio has mats, equipment, towels, cushions and everything else you’d need. Of course, you are welcome to bring your own towel, mat, or cushion if you prefer.
Do you teach Classical or Contemporary Pilates? My comprehensive training through Balanced Body was a contemporary Pilates education program, and I’ve taught hundreds of classes while studying under and working with classically trained instructors. This resulted in adopting a blend of styles into my teaching, merging the Classical and Contemporary methods to create an experience that remains true to Pilates while being accessible and adaptable to varying fitness levels and body types. My cues are verbal and I provide form corrections, rarely demonstrating the exercises myself in favor of hands-on adjustments. I mostly stick with the classical exercises and do not go “off book” and create completely new exercises that are not from the Pilates or pre-Pilates repertoire. However, I use props and provide progressions, variations, or modifications. I keep the Classical order and method in mind when creating sequences, but I vary the number of repetitions or order of exercises to meet specific needs or create variety in flows. If this sounds like a teaching style you’d enjoy, please reach out.
